Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT Treatment)

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) at Spring Gardens Recovery

At Spring Gardens Recovery, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is implemented as part of a comprehensive, individualized care plan designed to support safe detoxification, reduce cravings, and promote long-term recovery.

MAT is not used as a standalone approach. It is integrated with clinical therapy, medical oversight with education, and holistic treatment modalities to ensure each patient receives well-rounded, effective care.

All medications are prescribed and managed by licensed medical providers, with continuous nursing assessment, patient education, and clinical monitoring to ensure safety, effectiveness, and alignment with each patient’s individualized recovery goals.

Our approach focuses on three key outcomes:
Stabilization. Engagement. Long-term recovery.

Spring Gardens Recovery MAT Options:

Naltrexone

Naltrexone is a non-addictive oral medication taken daily and utilized at Spring Gardens Recovery as part of a structured relapse prevention plan. While FDA-approved for opioid and alcohol use disorders, it is also incorporated into treatment plans for individuals with polysubstance use patterns to support overall recovery stability.

Naltrexone works by blocking opioid receptors in the brain, reducing the rewarding effects of substance use and helping decrease cravings and impulsivity.

At Spring Gardens Recovery, Naltrexone is initiated only after full detoxification from opioids has been confirmed to prevent precipitated withdrawal. Patients receive a thorough medical evaluation prior to initiation, along with ongoing education and monitoring throughout treatment.

This medication is particularly beneficial for individuals seeking a non-addictive, daily medication option that supports abstinence and long-term behavioral change.

Also available in extended-release injectable form (see Vivitrol below).

Vivitrol

Vivitrol is the extended-release injectable form of Naltrexone, administered every 28 days to provide consistent, long-acting support in recovery.

Prior to administration, patients must be fully detoxified from opioids to prevent precipitated withdrawal. For individuals being treated for alcohol and other substance use disorders, Vivitrol may be initiated once the patient is medically stable and no longer experiencing acute withdrawal symptoms.

Vivitrol works by continuously blocking opioid receptors, preventing the euphoric effects of opioids and reducing alcohol-related cravings. Its extended-release formulation enhances adherence and provides consistent therapeutic coverage.

Our medical team provides ongoing monitoring, injection-site assessment, and patient education to ensure safe and effective use.

This medication is ideal for individuals seeking a non-addictive, structured, and accountability-driven approach without the need for daily dosing.

Suboxone

Suboxone is an oral combination medication containing buprenorphine and naloxone, used in the treatment of opioid use disorder.

At Spring Gardens Recovery, Suboxone is utilized to manage post-acute withdrawal symptoms (PAWS,) reduce cravings, and support stabilization in early recovery.

Suboxone is typically initiated at the end of withdrawal phase, once moderate withdrawal symptoms are decreased, to ensure safe and effective induction. Following stabilization, Suboxone may be continued after detox for the duration of treatment, based on the patient’s clinical needs and individualized care plan.

Buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, helps alleviate withdrawal symptoms without producing the full euphoric effects of opioids, while naloxone is included to deter misuse.

Patients are closely monitored by medical and nursing staff, with dosage adjustments made according to clinical response. Ongoing education is provided regarding proper administration, safety, and the role of Suboxone within a structured recovery plan.

Sublocade Injection

Sublocade is a once-monthly injectable form of buprenorphine used in the treatment of opioid use disorder.

At Spring Gardens Recovery, Sublocade is utilized as a long-acting option for patients who have been stabilized on a buprenorphine-containing medication, such as Suboxone.

Sublocade provides a steady release of medication over time, helping to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms without the need for daily dosing. This consistency supports treatment adherence and reduces the risk of missed doses or misuse.

Prior to initiation, patients must be clinically stabilized on an appropriate dose of buprenorphine. Once transitioned, Sublocade is administered by a healthcare professional, with ongoing monitoring to ensure effectiveness and patient safety.

This medication is ideal for individuals seeking a structured, low-maintenance MAT option that supports long-term stability.

How We Determine the Right Medication for You

At Spring Gardens Recovery, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to MAT. Each patient undergoes a comprehensive medical and clinical assessment to determine the safest and most effective path forward.

  1. Detox & Stabilization

During the initial phase, our medical team focuses on safely managing withdrawal symptoms and stabilizing the body.
Medications such as Suboxone may be initiated when appropriate to reduce discomfort and prevent complications.

Goal: Get the patient stable, comfortable, and ready to engage in treatment.

  1. Medical Evaluation & Individualized Planning

Once stabilized, patients are evaluated based on:

  • Substance use history (including polysubstance use)
  • Medical and psychiatric needs
  • Previous treatment experiences
  • Risk of relapse and overdose
  • Personal recovery goals

Goal: Build a treatment plan aligned with long-term success; not just short-term relief.

  1. Maintenance & Long-Term Support

As recovery progresses, MAT may be continued or adjusted using options such as:

  • Suboxone (daily stabilization)
  • Sublocade (monthly support)
  • Vivitrol or Naltrexone (non-addictive relapse prevention)

Goal: Consistency, accountability, and long-term stability.

Which Medication Option Is Right for You?

Choosing the right MAT option can feel overwhelming; but you don’t have to figure it out alone.

You may benefit from daily stabilization support if:

  • You are experiencing or at risk for opioid withdrawal
  • You have strong cravings early in recovery
  • You need help feeling physically stable

→ Suboxone may be appropriate

You may benefit from a long-acting monthly option if:

  • You prefer not to take medication daily
  • You want structure and consistency
  • You’ve already stabilized and want maintenance support

→ Sublocade may be appropriate

You may benefit from a non-addictive, abstinence-based option if:

  • You have fully detoxed from opioids
  • You want to avoid opioid-based medications
  • You are focused on relapse prevention

→ Vivitrol or Naltrexone may be appropriate

You Don’t Have to Decide Alone

The right medication isn’t about preference; it’s about what will keep you safe and give you the best chance at long-term recovery.

At Spring Gardens Recovery, our medical and clinical team will guide you through every step, answer your questions, and adjust your treatment plan as you progress.

Your recovery is not one-size-fits-all.
